Between the stacks: Wando Library invites all to Reading Gdn. cleanup

The Post and Courier recently highlighted a community-wide opportunity at the Wando Mount Pleasant Library, inviting residents, volunteers, and Palmetto Garden Club of Mount Pleasant members to take part in a Reading Garden cleanup event focused on sprucing up the library’s outdoor spaces. The initiative reflects a spirit of collaboration between the Library and PGCMP, hands-on service, environmental stewardship, and the joy of coming together to care for a garden space that supports literacy, learning, and community connection. Volunteers are still needed, and members are encouraged to join in and support this meaningful community effort. As I am writing this, the temperature outside is a chilly 47 degrees, and the last thing on my mind is working outside. But to Lowcountry gardeners, the winter months are the time to prepare your garden and landscapes for spring and summer blooms. That is exactly what we plan to do here at the Wando Mount Pleasant Branch Library, and we need your help.

Our annual Reading Garden clean-up, organized by the Palmetto Garden Club, will be held on Feb. 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You can stop by, email or call the library to register. We welcome volunteers of all ages. Anyone under 18 needs a parent’s signature to participate. Just remember to bring your garden gloves!

The partnership between Wando Mount Pleasant Library and the Palmetto Garden Club has been blooming for several years, and the Reading Garden clean-up has been a huge help to enhance the outdoor space. They have improved drainage, improved the soil and introduced a variety of native pollinators. This year, the project lead, Tracy Doyle, created a native plant path which will soon feature information on the plants and how to care for them in your own garden.

These improvements would not have been possible without generous donations from our community businesses. We would like to thank Lowcountry Mulch, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Julia’s Garden Nook for supporting the Wando Library. If you would like to support future Reading Garden projects, or the Children’s Reading Garden, please contact branch manager Kate Dentzman.
